Denver Broncos Billy Thompson’s Retirement & Career

After a remarkable 13-year career in the NFL, Billy Thompson retired in 1981 as one of the greatest defensive backs to ever play for the Denver Broncos. His career, marked by numerous accolades and achievements, made him a beloved figure in the city of Denver and a respected member of the NFL community.

Thompson’s career began in 1969 when he was drafted in the third round by the Broncos. He quickly established himself as a versatile player, capable of playing both safety and cornerback positions. He played in all 14 games of his rookie season, making an immediate impact with his hard-hitting style of play and outstanding coverage skills.

Over the next decade, Thompson continued to be a mainstay in the Broncos’ defense. He played in 181 games for the team, making 40 interceptions, recovering 19 fumbles, and scoring 6 touchdowns. His leadership on and off the field was also recognized by his teammates, who voted him team captain for seven consecutive seasons.

Despite his individual accomplishments, Thompson’s biggest achievement came in 1977 when he helped lead the Broncos to their first-ever Super Bowl appearance. In that game, Thompson recorded an interception and a fumble recovery, helping the Broncos to a 27-10 victory over the Oakland Raiders in the AFC Championship game. Although the Broncos ultimately fell to the Dallas Cowboys in the Super Bowl, Thompson’s contributions to the team’s historic season will never be forgotten.

Thompson’s contributions to the Broncos’ success did not go unnoticed by the league, either. He was selected to two Pro Bowls and was named to the All-Pro team twice. In 2005, Thompson was inducted into the Broncos’ Ring of Fame, joining the ranks of other legendary Broncos players such as John Elway and Terrell Davis.

After retiring from the NFL, Thompson remained active in the Denver community. He worked with the Broncos’ alumni association, serving as the organization’s president for several years. He also founded the Billy Thompson Foundation, a nonprofit organization that focuses on providing scholarships to underprivileged youth in the Denver area.

Throughout his career and retirement, Billy Thompson has remained a beloved figure in Denver and a respected member of the NFL community. His accomplishments on the field and his contributions to the community have cemented his place in Broncos history, and his legacy will continue to inspire future generations of players and fans alike.
