After a remarkable 13-year career in the NFL, Billy Thompson retired in 1981 as one of the greatest defensive backs to ever play for the Denver Broncos. Thompson’s career began in 1969 when he was drafted in the third round by the Broncos. He quickly established himself as a versatile player, capable of playing both safety and cornerback positions. He played in all 14 games of his rookie season, making an immediate impact with his hard-hitting style of play and outstanding coverage skills.
Over the next decade, Thompson continued to be a mainstay in the Broncos’ defense. He played in 181 games for the team, making 40 interceptions, recovering 19 fumbles, and scoring 6 touchdowns. After retiring from the NFL, Thompson remained active in the Denver community. He worked with the Broncos’ alumni association, serving as the organization’s president for several years. He also founded the Billy Thompson Foundation, a nonprofit organization that focuses on providing scholarships to underprivileged youth in the Denver area.
